How will we learn in Year 3 and 4?
Children in Year 3 and 4 will learn by following the Curriculum for Wales. The Curriculum for Wales aims to prepare young people to thrive in a future where digital skills, adaptability and creativity is important. Through active involvement, children learn life skills, extend their imagination, creative skills, physical development as well as their communication and thinking skills. The children will be engaging in variety of exciting topics that allow the children to progress in their next steps of learning, whilst always considering their literacy and numeracy skills. Each child's learning is carefully observed and their progress is planned for, ensuring that they keep moving forward on their educational journey.

Topic for this term
Our whole school topic for this term is How things work and year 3 and 4 will be looking at Robots; here are some of our planned learning experiences this term.

  • We will be exploring story writing and the sci-fi genre as well as arguments and debates.
  • There will be opportunities for coding and algorithms.
  • We will be looking at electricity and applying our learning to our own robot models.
  • There will be an opportunity to explore the history of robots and the effects this has had on society and the workforce.
  • There will be opportunities to explore sculpture in our art activities.
  • In music we will be composing and appraising music to accompany the story 'The Robot and the Bluebird'.
  • As we are beginning to prepare our class gardens we will look at robots/machines that are used in agriculture.

Seesaw
Your child will be given a QR code to access their individual Seesaw account. We upload photographs of your child's learning and share important information with you via Seesaw. It is therefore essential that you are also logged into the app via your family learning code. Please ask for help with this if needed. We are happy to show you how to use the app to support your child. Every Sunday there will be a weekly message via Seesaw ro share important information about the week ahead. We also enjoy sharing some of our adventures via Seesaw, it's an exciting way to keep you up to date with our exciting experiences.

Cello

Currently, all children in Year 3 and 4 have the opportunity to experience playing the Cello through the Theatre Clwyd music programme. Each Monday, Ruth from the music service visits us to teach the children.

PE Lessons
We have P.E on a Tuesday afternoon, currently this is swimming.

Cricket Wales will be doing 4 sessions with the children, PE kits will be required on Wednesdays ( see the Sunday message for confirmation of dates).
The P.E kit is a white plain t-shirt and black joggers/leggings/shorts. Children can come to school dressed ready for P.E.

Forest School and Outdoor Learning
At Ysgol Rhos Helyg we provide lots of opportunities for your child to work in the outdoor environment. We are fortunate enough to have an outdoor environment by our classroom which we use as often as possible.

Children are to come to school dressed in old/warm Forest School clothes, please can they bring wellingtons and if possible their own waterproofs when we have a session.  Please ensure you are logged into Seesaw for weekly updates about this as I will confirm sessions in the weekly message. Fridays are the designated day for Year 3 and 4 to enjoy forest schools.

Reading, Bookbags and Homework
In school, your child will be immersed in language experiences and activities. Their skills will develop through talking, communicating and listening. Children have many opportunities to read during the school day and talk about their stories. We listen to children read at every opportunity in school, this will be done in a variety of ways, using their reading book, a reading based activity, during whole class readers or during other activities such as research.

We encourage reading at home as much as possible. Please bring book bags in as often as possible with their reading book and a comment in the reading record. Children can return their book to school on any day of the week.

Snack and drinks

We follow Welsh Government guidelines here at school and encourage healthy snack. Children can bring a piece of fruit to enjoy for their break time. Children are also encouraged to bring a water bottle in to school, it can be refilled here too. Children have access to their water bottles throughout the day.

 Absences
If your child is absent from school, please telephone school to explain any absence, so the register can be updated as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support,

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
