How will we learn in Year 1 and 2?
Children in Year 1 and 2 will learn by following the Curriculum for Wales. The Curriculum for Wales aims to prepare young people to thrive in a future where digital skills, adaptability and creativity, alongside knowledge are crucial. Through active involvement, children learn life skills, extend their imagination, creative skills, physical development and communication and thinking skills.

In Year 1 and 2, our independent class areas offer engaging challenges in numeracy, phonics, literacy, reading, digital skills, and creative activities, encouraging problem-solving, collaboration, and exploration at each child’s own pace. We encourage children to become independent, managing their own belongings, finding their own activities and making decisions.

Alongside this, focus tasks guided by teachers provide opportunities for deeper learning and skill development across all aspects of the Curriculum for Wales. Through observation, encouraging questions and discussions, we monitor how we can best support and provide for the next stage of your child’s learning.

Topic for this term
Our whole school topic for this term is Sustainable Earth. In Years 1 and 2, we are learning about Under the Sea, with a particular focus on plastic pollution.

Seesaw
Your child will be given a QR code to access their individual Seesaw account. We upload photographs of your child's learning and share important information with you via Seesaw. It is therefore essential that you are also logged into the app via your family learning code. Please ask for help with this if needed. We are happy to show you how to use the app to support your child.

PE Lessons
We have P.E on a Thursday afternoon.
The P.E kit is a white plain t-shirt and black joggers/leggings/shorts. Children can come to school dressed ready for P.E.

Forest School and Outdoor Learning
At Ysgol Rhos Helyg we provide lots of opportunities for your child to work in the outdoor environment. We are fortunate enough to have an outdoor environment by our classroom which we use as often as possible.

Children are to come to school dressed in old/warm Forest School clothes and wellingtons in a bag on a Monday please. Please ensure you are logged into Seesaw for weekly updates about this.

Reading, Bookbags and Homework
In school, your child will be immersed in language experiences and activities. Their skills will develop through talking, communicating and listening. Children have many opportunities to read during the school day and talk about their stories. We listen to children read at every opportunity in school, and they have an in-school reading book as well as one they take home.

We encourage reading at home as much as possible. Please bring book bags in as often as possible with their reading book and a comment in the reading record.

Homework is set every Friday in their homework books, and it is expected to be returned by the following week. Homework alternates from a literacy/ phonics focus to a numeracy focus each week.

 Absences
If your child is absent from school, please telephone school to explain any absence, so the register can be updated as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss R Brundell
