How will we learn in Reception and Year 1?
The children in Reception and Year 1 will learn in a Foundation Phase setting. The Foundation Phase is a developmental curriculum for 3 to 7-year-olds in Wales. Through active involvement children learn life skills, extend their imagination, creative skills, physical development and communication and thinking skills.
We encourage children to use a range of resources to fuel their activities and actively encourage children to play alongside or with others to build on their collaborative skills. Equally we encourage children to become independent, managing their own belongings, finding their own activities and making decisions.
Through careful observation we discover what and how children are learning, how they communicate and how we can best provide for the next stage of their learning. We support them in their play by listening to them, watching them, providing and encouraging questions and extending their thinking. This, in addition to adult led activities provides a balanced curriculum.
What will we learn in Reception?
The Foundation Phase has seven areas of learning, where stimulating structured play activities can be woven into the learning experiences. This term we will be learning through the topic of Through the Window.
Topic for this term
In school your child will be immersed in language experiences and activities. Their skills will develop through talking, communicating and listening. Your child will have opportunities to choose and use reading materials and will be given a wide range of opportunities to talk about reading materials available to them. Please bring book bags in on a Thursday and they will be returned on a Friday in time for the weekend.
We have P.E on a Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The children that go to Year 1 class in the afternoon will have P.E on a Monday and a Thursday. The P.E kit is a white t-shirt and black shorts.
This term all PE sessions will take place indoors.
Children are welcome to leave P.E kits in school all week if you wish to save bringing them everyday.
At Ysgol Rhos Helyg we provide lots of opportunities for your child to work in the outdoor environment. We are fortunate in Early Years to have access to our own outdoor environment straight from the classroom. Therefore, we hope to use this environment as often as possible in order to enhance children’s learning experiences.
Please label all items clearly with your child’s name.
Healthy snack will be available in school each week for reception children to enjoy during the morning session. This will consist of a variety of choices from week to week, including apples, melons, bananas, oranges and many more. To receive a healthy snack each day please pay by using the schools Gateway system.
School dinners cost £2.05p per day. Please pay using the schools Gateway system.
If your child is absent from school please ring school or send a note into the teacher to explain any absence so the register can be updated as soon as possible.
I am looking forward to another successful term with your children.
Thank you for your support,
